Statisticians are key players in drug development, research & development and manufacturing of a pharmaceutical product. They can be involved in a wide range of activities, including experimental design, sample size and power calculations, data collection and the analysis, interpretation and presentation of results. To perform well, Statisticians need a variety of skills such as effective communication, computer literacy, good time management and the willingness to learn new scientific areas.
Statistical Programmers use SAS to analyse clinical trials data, and often spend much more time preparing datasets for analysis than performing actual statistical analyses on them. The most successful programmers are in touch with the industry and how it is evolving, keeping up to date with ever changing technology and industry standards. They attend conferences and meetings with others in their profession and get involved in industry groups, able to understand the bigger picture and be aware of the wider implications of the work they do.
