Research & Resourcing Ensures Success in Spain

Merck Sharp and Dohme (MSD) are a global pharmaceutical company that has developed medicines to combat serious diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Cancer and Diabetes. SEC has supported MSD’s recruitment in the UK for a number of years and has built up a good partnership with the MSD HR team.  During a routine account management call, we discovered that MSD were expanding in Spain and so looking to recruit for a number of new positions.

Beatriz de Luiz is a Spanish national and manages the recruitment and supply of candidates to SEC clients in Spain. She was able to track down the local HR manager and introduced SEC to him.  Beatriz discovered that MSD needed five regional medical managers and that candidates needed to be a qualified MIR (Spanish system) in General Medicine, currently working within the Spanish Public Health System and with a good level of English. MSD were struggling to find the right type of candidate and Beatriz agreed to undertake some research and resourcing to see if she could fill the roles.

Through web advertising and extensive networking Beatriz managed to identify a shortlist of candidates for the roles. This was a challenging task as a) there is shortage of medics in Spain and b) most of them want to remain within the health system.  During her recruitment process, Beatriz needed to be very proactive in filtering out candidates and preparing them for a life working in an industry that is a very different proposition to working within the government health system. She developed a very good relationship with the MSD recruitment manager, finding examples of medics who had already joined MSD and who had experienced the transition.

MSD undertook a series of interviews and assessments with the candidates and Beatriz helped both to prepare the candidates and to make the arrangements on MSD’s behalf.

In competition with an international recruitment company with 5 offices in Spain, SEC has filled three out of four positions and had interviews for the fifth position. Feedback from the candidates has been positive and MSD was delighted with the dedicated service they received. SEC Pharma then had a number of other positions to recruit for, for their Head Office in Madrid and have signed retained terms and conditions with MSD in Spain as a result.
